GOLD HISTORY

DEEP & RICH GOLD HISTORY

Fairbanks Alaska has a deep and rich gold history, and is commonly referred to as the Golden Heart of the Interior. In 1902 Felix Pedro discovered gold, leading many adventurers “North to Alaska” for decades to come to find their fortune. More than one hundred years later many still have “gold fever”, and there is nothing in the world like seeing the first glint of gold in your pan. You can try your luck at gold panning during your stay in Fairbanks.

Gold mining today ranges from industrious prospectors running small placer operations to multi-million dollar operations such as Fort Knox Gold Mine. Located 15 mi from Fairbanks, Fort Knox is the largest producer of gold in the history of the state of Alaska. It has an estimated life-of-mine production of about 1.5 million gold equivalent ounces.

MIDNIGHT  SUN

One of the hallmarks of a summer visit to Fairbanks is enjoying the days of long lasting late sunshine.  The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon with a season ranging from mid-April to mid-August with a peak on summer solstice, June 20th or 21st depending on the year.  Alaskans live for these endless summer days and it is not uncommon to find your neighbors doing yard work or gardening at midnight, or you to enjoy fishing into the wee hours of the morning.  Fairbanks residents and our many visitors rejoice in the summer warmth and sunshine, participating in all of the events centered around summer solstice such as the midnight sun semi-pro summer collegiate baseball game.

EXPERIENCE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Fall and winter visitors to Fairbanks can experience the northern lights, a luminous glow in the night sky. An ethereal experience like no other, the colors of the lights are so vivid it seems you can almost reach out and touch them. The colors range from fireweed pink to lilac and pale lime green, and often you can hear them crackle and pop as the brilliant lights dance across the sky.
